This model features an experimental camouflage scheme.
Stationed from the USS Constellation with the RVAH-6 “Fleurs” squadron, this RA-5C bore registration 149313. Decorated with an experimental camouflage scheme, this aircraft was one of the first two Vigilantes that trialed Southeast Asia (SEA) style liveries, the other having been from the RVAH-13 “Bats” squadron. Piloted by Cdr. Art Skelly and LtJG. Joe Shevlin, 149313 was deployed to Vietnam in 1966 with RVAH-6 and CVW-15. Endeavoring to gather data on effectiveness, half of the aircraft onboard USS Constellation were repainted with their own respective SEA camouflages, while the other half maintained traditional silver and white.

History and Specifications:
Though originally produced for high-speed and high-altitude bombing runs, the nuclear capable Vigilante would have its role taken by submarines instead. Refitted with camera equipment and side-facing radar during production, the aircraft would be renamed RA-5 before assignment to the Vietnam conflicts. Featuring advanced fly-by-wire controls and all-moving tail surfaces, the “heavy” aircraft was surprisingly maneuverable and very fast. Powered by two J79-GE-10 engines at the back, the Vigilante could attain speeds over Mach-2 with ease, supplemented by multiple fuel tanks on the underwing pylons.
