Developed from the foundations of the A300 project, the Airbus A310 was built as a wide-body, twin-engine passenger and cargo aircraft. Flying for the first time in 1982, it was smaller than the predecessor A300, but took on improved electronic systems and decreased fuel consumption. Between the years of 1981 and 1983, 255 aircraft were produced, with deliveries commencing until 1998.
Boasting the widest fuselage in its class, the A310 type can carry between 190-230 passengers on a typical flight, with up to 5,000 miles of non-stop range. Operated by a crew of two, the later A310-300 is powered by a pair of JT9D-7R4E1, PW4000, or CF6-80C2 engines with 90-100,000 lbs of combined thrust. Resultant top speed is 554 mph, altitude limit is 41,100 ft, and maximum takeoff weight is 361,500 lbs.
Creating the foundation for modern Emirates Airways, the Airbus A310 was integral to the operator’s early financial success. Paving the way for routes across Dubai, Europe, and Asia, the brand would connect with US Airways, expanding the list to more than 30 destinations.
