Introduced in 1941 as the US Navy’s primary carrier-based dive bomber, the SBD-3 Dauntless would quickly become famous for its duties in the Battle of Midway. Sinking more enemy vessels than ever before, the Dauntless sent four Japanese aircraft-carriers below the waves in 1942. Though it boasted an upgraded armor package and engine, it was still thought to be a sub-par craft by its opposition, taking on fierce competition and holding strong.

Powered by the wright R-1820-60 radial engine, the 4-ton aircraft had 1,200 hp at its disposal, resulting in a top speed of 255 mph and just over 1,100 miles of range. Performance was nothing special though, the Dauntless shone much brighter in the weaponry department. On each wing, it featured a set of “dive-brakes” which reduced the speed that a pilot had to withstand while aiming ordnance. Once on target, a trapeze launcher would ensure that weapons would not collide with the propellor, as the pilot pitches up to avoid the sea. Die-Cast version has authentic paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad printed decals, and retracted or deployed landing gear. Also includes optional tail hook, trapeze bomb, spinning propeller, and display stand to show the model in flight. Measures 5.5”l with a 7” wingspan at 1:72 scale.
