History and Specifications:
Introduced in 1970 as USAF’s largest strategic airlifter, the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy has been a vital asset to every military operation of the last 5 decades. Measuring 244ft long and boasting an impressive 222ft wingspan, it can carry payloads up to 264,400 lbs. Crucial to combat success, the aircraft can reach speeds over 580 mph and distances beyond 3,700 miles on just internal fuel. Refreshed through the following decades with new engines, updated avionics, and procedural systems, more than 50 C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft are still in service. Though many were manufactured in the 1970s, C-5A and B models converted to the Super Galaxy specification are expected to remain active until the 2040s.
