History and Specifications:
Designed for use as a patrol bomber in the US Navy, the PBM Mariner was manufactured by the Glenn L. Martin Company as rival of the PBY Catalina. Featuring two massive wings and a pair of Wright R-2600 radial engines, the Mariner could float on the water or fly up to 20,000 ft of altitude. Reaching a top speed of 205 mph and ranges over 2,600 miles, it carried 4,000 lbs of bombs, depth charges, and torpedoes. Taking part in anti-submarine patrols as the United States entered WWII, PBMs were responsible for taking down more than 10 German U-Boats over the following years. Active between 1940 and 1956, Mariner aircraft even served during the Korean war, providing crucial long-range patrol capabilities. Ceasing production in 1949 with a total of 1,366 aircraft built, the PBM remains the largest twin-engine flying boat in the world.
