Developed as an improvement of the original MiG-17, the “Fresco-C” variant was of the latest models to be produced. With a new engine and improved control systems, it was outfitted for combat against advanced supersonic opponents. Though it was still subsonic with no guided missiles, the Soviets produced more than 1,600 for use in several of their allied nations. Based on an outdated formula, the antiquated MiG-17 would soon be phased out for the more suitable MiG-19 and MiG-21 supersonic fighters.
Featuring the new Klimov VK-1F afterburning engine, the Fresco-C now had a massive 25% increase in power, permitting it to chase down the powerful supersonic enemies such as the American F-4 Phantom. Though its top speed was barely supersonic, the type could out-climb and out-energy many of its opponents, with excellent energy retention in dogfight. Additionally, there was an upgrade to the flight control system, with boosted ailerons and elevator to combat the higher speeds. This also reduced the effort from the pilot necessary to sustain maneuvers.
Operated by the Egyptian Air Force, this MiG-17F was camouflaged with a sandy “Nile Valley” livery which reduced its observability to enemy forces. It was used to try and reclaim the Sinai Peninsula area which had been taken by Israel during the 6-day war. Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad printed decals, optional landing gear and display stand to show the model in flight. Measures 6.25”l with a 5.25” wingspan at 1:72 scale.
