The SR-71 Blackbird was an American reconnaissance aircraft that served in the United States Air Force during the late 20th century. Designed by Lockheed Martin during the 1950s and flying for the first time during 1964, it soon became one of the fastest jets of all time. With a maximum speed in excess of Mach 3 (3,900 km/h) and operational altitude up to 26 km, it was extremely difficult for anti-missile defense systems to shoot down. Featuring an advanced titanium design, the SR-71 could also withstand the extreme temperatures generated during high supersonic flight. Traveling at the edge of space, the legendary Blackbird has captured images that most could only dream of, providing an incredible tactical advantage.
