The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II has received much praise and acclaim for its contributions all around the world, serving many nations and for an extended period of time. Even though its first flight was in May of 1958, the Phantom still serves in many countries active-duty Air Force, such as Greece and even previously Japan up until 2021. The aircraft was used extensively in Vietnam, where most people will recognize its iconic shape, serving as a frontline fighter for the United States. It carried a massive payload of ordinance, including guided and dumb bombs, rockets, air-to-ground missiles, and even feared air-to-air weapons such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
This specific variant, the F-4E, was a massive upgrade to the previous C and D predecessors with a modified airframe, engines, and internal avionics. Upon entering service in 1967, thrust was around 5-7% higher than the original, with new leading edge wing slats which improved low speed stability and turn rate, adapting the angle of attack to reach maximum performance. Internally, the major changes included the new AN/APQ-120 radar set with a smaller antenna which made space for the addition of an internal cannon. The newly installed 20mm M61 Vulcan was the weapon of choice for the aircraft since its creation, but previous F-4C and D variants could only carry this as an external device, taking up room on the belly of the plane.
Representing the final year of operation for the Phantom II in JASDF service, this aircraft was one of many to take on a new coat of paint for the 302nd Squadron. With four decades of service upon their last flight in March 2021, the beloved F-4EJ flies on into the night. Though it will no longer serve the JASDF, other nations still operate the legendary fighter.
