Beloved by its pilots, the SBD-3 Dauntless was pivotal in the Battle of Midway
Primary carrier-based dive bomber for the United States Navy at the start of WWII, the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless did not have impressive performance figures. Rising up against heavy resistance in the Pacific, the aircraft's pilots bravely defied this fact to strike some of the most powerful targets in the Japanese fleet. Fending off heavy anti-aircraft fire and numerous fighters along the way, it struck heavy blows to the enemy war effort.

History and Specifications:
Introduced in 1941 as the most advanced carrier-based dive bomber of the United States Navy, the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless was an improved version of the SBD line. Fitted with an improved armor package and self-healing fuel tanks, it was expected to survive against harsher enemy fighters of WWII. Powered by the wright R-1820 radial engine, the 4-ton aircraft had just 1,200 hp at its disposal, resulting in a lackluster 255 mph top speed and handling that was exacerbated by the additional armor plates. Though it received the nickname "Slow But Deadly" for its lumbering presence, the Dauntless was well liked by pilots and achieved a remarkably positive air-to-air combat ratio for the time.
