History and Specifications:
Introduced in 1941 after just two years of development, the production B-24 Liberator was faster than the B-17 Flying Fortress, while carrying an increased weapons load. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin-Wasp engines, the Liberator had more than 4,800 hp available, allowing it to reach 290 mph in level flight. Attaining altitudes over 27,000 ft and covering 2,800 miles on a single tank of fuel, it could strike well into enemy territories. Utilizing the coveted Norden bomb-sight, B-24 crews would participate in the ultimate test of their aircraft’s abilities during 1943. Sent as three squadrons of aircraft, Liberators would withstand heavy defenses to level the Luftwaffe’s Gotha production facility in an incredible battle. Landing 98% of their bombs on target, the B-24 was devastating to the German forces, turning the tide of war in Europe. At the end of WWII, 18,400 Liberators were manufactured, retiring with flying colors as a key part of the Allied efforts.
