Introduced in June of 1970, the Lockheed C5 Galaxy is one of the largest aircraft in the world, intended to carry oversized, heavy cargo loads that will not fit in standard freighters. Featuring a distinctive T-tail design with enormous wings and engines, the C5 is one of those planes you just can’t ignore when you see it. A huge opening nose, cargo bay doors at the tail, and massive high lift devices on the wings, the Galaxy creates an aura of purpose that few other aircraft can match. Lockheed suffered from budget overruns and financial difficulties during development, but eventually, the craft saw mainline production and a total of 131 have been manufactured.
By the early 2000s, 3 decades into service, the legacy C5B’s and C’s have been converted to the modern C5M standard, now called the Super Galaxy. In order to meet the USAF’s desire for the type to fly until 2040, the modernized variant takes on improved powerplants, decreasing fuel consumption by 20% and permitting much higher rates of delivery at each destination. These new engines are the General Electric F138-100 Turbofans, which create 51,000 lbs of thrust each, or 204,000 lbs combined. Typical crew for the Super Galaxy is 7 members, with an Aircraft Commander, Pilot, 2 Flight Engineers, and 3 Loadmasters, though the craft can be flown empty without the 3 Loadmasters onboard. Cargo capacity is a total of 36 HCU-6/E “Master Pallets” or a total of 281,000 lbs maximum.
Serving in the Yom Kippur and Desert Storm wars, the C-5 Galaxy has proven itself to be an instrumental part of any conflict, carrying unmatched levels of cargo to places of need. Featuring a low-visibility grey camouflage with the markings of Dover Air Force Base, this C-5M Super Galaxy fulfills duties for the 436th and 512th Airlift Wing in Delaware. Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad-printed decals, and detailed landing gear. Measures 7.5”l with a 6.75” wingspan at 1:400 scale.
