Responding to the need for advanced fighters for combat, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (renamed Messerschmidt) would develop what would soon become the Luftwaffe’s primary steed. Demonstrating excellent performance just two years after its first flights in 1935, the BF-109 would be produced for nearly two decades, with over 33,000 manufactured. At this tally, it became the most produced single-seat fighter in history, with a legacy destined to ring for centuries.
Fitting the Daimler-Benz DB600 “inverted-V” engine just in front of the cockpit, the early BF-109Es quickly demonstrated excellent climbing performance, speed, and maneuverability on the battlefield. It also had several unique attributes, especially in the firepower realm, as it featured an internal cannon that fired through the propeller shaft. This was very controversial upon its debut though, as pilots did not believe 60 rounds of ammunition was enough to complete their missions. Addressing their concerns, the aircraft would be retrofitted with a 15mm machine gun, before finally being replaced with a 200 round MG151/20 autocannon in the BF-109F variants. All later versions would continue with this similar ethos, with only some rare editions adding the 30mm MK-103 autocannon for anti-bomber duties.
Flown by Erich Hartmann of JG52, this BF-109G-6 accounted for a large number aerial victories out of the claimed 352 in his lifetime. Known for being one of the most aggressive units in the Luftwaffe forces, they claimed hundreds of Soviet aircraft on the eastern front during WWII. With mottled green, black, and grey colors, the BF-109G-6 would be known as one of the greatest aircraft in history, earning the victory tallies on its exterior.
